What does the Bible say about fortune-tellers? 6 things you must know

  • admin

This is what the Bible says about fortune tellers and fortune telling:

  • God warned His people against listening to fortune-tellers (Deuteronomy 18:10–14).
  • Fortune-telling is like the sin of rebellion (1 Samuel 15:23).
  • God makes fools out of fortune-tellers (Isaiah 44:24–25).
  • God executes judgment upon fortune-tellers (Micah 5:12, AMP).
  • Fortune-telling is a demonic practice (Acts 16:16).
  • Fortune-tellers prophesy lies (Jeremiah 27:8–10).

Let us examine the identified scriptures.

1. God warned His people against listening to fortune-tellers.

This is according to Deuteronomy 18:10–14 (AMP), which says:

“There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or daughter pass through the fire [as a sacrifice], one who uses divination and fortune-telling, one who practices witchcraft, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who casts a charm or spell, or a medium, or a spiritist, or a necromancer [who seeks the dead]. For everyone who does these things is utterly repulsive to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices, the LORD, your God, is driving them out before you. You shall be blameless (complete, perfect) before the LORD, your God. For these nations which you shall dispossess, listen to those who practice witchcraft and to diviners and fortune-tellers; but as for you, the LORD your God has not allowed you to do so.”

God directed the children of Israel to kill anyone found engaging in fortune-telling because God detests the practice.

2. According to God, fortune-telling is equivalent to the sin of rebellion.

This is recorded in 1 Samuel 15:23 (AMP). It says:

“For rebellion is as serious as the sin of divination (fortune-telling), and disobedience is as serious as false religion and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He also has rejected you as king.”

These words were spoken by the Prophet Samuel and were directed at King Saul, who had disobeyed God’s commandment. As a result, the kingdom was taken away from him and given to David.

3. God makes fools out of fortune-tellers.

This is recorded in Isaiah 44:24–25 (AMP). The Bible says:

“For the LORD, your Redeemer, and He who formed you from the womb says this: ‘I am the LORD, Maker of all things, who alone stretches out the heavens, who spreads out the earth by Myself, frustrating the signs and confounding the omens of boasters (false prophets), making fools out of fortune-tellers, counteracting the wise, and making their knowledge ridiculous.”

This means that God overturns whatever fortune-tellers predict will happen. So, in essence, only what God has declared will happen ends up happening. Scripture says, “Only the counsel of God shall stand’. This is recorded in Psalm 33:11 as follows:

“The counsel of the LORD stands forever, the thoughts and plans of His heart through all generations.”

4. God executes judgment upon fortune-tellers.

This is according to Micah 5:12 (AMP). The Bible says:

I will cut off witchcraft and sorceries from your hands, and you shall have no more fortune tellers.”

In this passage, God declares impeding judgment upon Israel for allowing fortune-telling, sorcery, and witchcraft to thrive in the land.

5. Fortune-telling is a demonic practice.

This is recorded for us in Acts 16:16 (AMP), which says:

“It happened that as we were on our way to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination [that is, a demonic spirit claiming to foretell the future and discover hidden knowledge], and she brought her owners a good profit by fortune-telling.”

This tells you that all those people out there who claim to foretell the future and discover hidden knowledge use demonic spirits to do that. All demonic spirits serve Satan, not God.

The Bible tells us that ‘no one really knows what is going to happen; no one can predict the future’ (Ecclesiastes 10:14, NLT).

Isaiah 46:9–10 (NLT) says

“Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come.”

So when you visit a fortune teller to know your future, you are in essence telling God that you do not trust Him with your life but instead trust Satan. And for this reason, God will turn His back on you, leaving you vulnerable to all manner of attacks by Satan.

6. Fortune-tellers prophecy lies.

During the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, God commanded that all nations be subject to him. Any nation that failed to do so would be crushed by Nebuchadnezzar in accordance with God’s purpose for that particular time.

Unfortunately, the fortune-tellers in Israel lied to the people, telling them not to submit to Nebuchadnezzar’s rule. However, the Prophet Jeremiah insisted that God had established the king of Babylon as the superpower of that time, and thus, Israel had to submit to him.

This is recorded in Jeremiah 27:8–10. Scripture says:

“As for the nation or kingdom that does not serve King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and does not place its neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, that nation I will punish by sword, famine, and plague—this is the LORD’s declaration—until through him I have destroyed it. So you should not listen to your prophets, diviners, dreamers, fortune-tellers, or sorcerers who say to you, ‘Don’t serve the king of Babylon! They are prophesying a lie to you so that you will be removed from your land. I will banish you, and you will perish” (CSB).

Conclusion

This article discussed what the Bible says about fortune-tellers. It is clear from the reviewed scriptures that God detests fortune-telling. Therefore, He swiftly executes judgment upon all who engage in this evil practice. This is because fortune-telling is a form of idolatry, which turns people away from seeking after God to seeking after demonic revelation. As a believer, God expects you to seek Him alone because He is a jealous God. When you disobey this commandment and go after the knowledge of fortune-tellers, God abandons you, leaving you dangerously exposed to satanic manipulations. So stick to God’s lane. I hope this was helpful. God bless you.
