There is no verse in the Bible where it expressly says that ‘kissing before marriage is a sin’.
However, the Bible warns us against ‘awakening love before its time’. We read this in the book of Song of Solomon 8:4 (NCB), which says:
“I charge you, daughters of Jerusalem: Do not stir up or awaken love before its time has come.”
One way to stir up love is through kissing.
Here is how the Encyclopedia of the Bible defines the word kiss:
“As a noun, ‘kiss’ signifies a ‘touch’ or ‘caress of the lips’ (to another person’s lips, cheek, beard, hands, or feet) in a token of affection, greeting, or reverence; as a verb, it means ‘to ‘touch’ or ‘press with the lips.’’” (https://www.biblegateway.com/resources/encyclopedia-of-the-bible/Kiss).
In this article, the term kiss implies the act of male and female adults caressing or pressing the lips of each other in an affectionate, intimate manner.
Those who have kissed someone will tell you that kissing is a very intimate act that may sexually arouse the parties involved. Once your lips get interlocked with someone else’s lips, a deep desire for sex is aroused, and very few people, if any, are able to resist this urge. So the outcome of kissing is often sexual intercourse, which is sinful if the parties involved are not married.
Here are some Bible verses that mention the power of kissing:
Song of Solomon 1:2 (NIV)
“Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth, for your love is more delightful than wine.”
Song of Solomon 7:8–9 (CEV)
“I will climb that tree and cling to its branches. I will discover that your breasts are clusters of grapes and that your breath is the aroma of apples. Kissing you is more delicious than drinking the finest wine. How wonderful and tasty!”
The Bible clearly warns the unmarried against engaging in activities that may lead to sexual sin, such as caressing or kissing. Here are some of the scriptures:
Romans 8:13 (NKJV)
“For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”
1 Corinthians 6:13 (NKJV)
“Foods are for the stomach, and the stomach is for foods, but God will destroy both of them. Now the body is not for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.”
1 Corinthians 6:18 (NKJV)
“Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man commits is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body.”
Galatians 5:13 (NKJV)
“For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.”
Galatians 5:19 (NKJV)
“Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, and lewdness.”
Ephesians 5:3-5 (NKJV)
“But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; neither filthiness nor foolish talking nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.”
Colossians 3:5 (NKJV)
“Therefore put to death your members which are on earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.”
1 Thessalonians 4:3-5 (NKJV)
“For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God.”
Titus 3:3 (NKJV)
“For we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.”
Hebrews 13:4 (NKJV)
“Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.”
James 1:21 (NKJV)
“Therefore, lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.”
1 Peter 2:11–12 (NKJV)
“Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul, having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation.”
1 Peter 4:1-2 (NKJV)
“Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he who suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, and he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men but for the will of God.”
I hope this is helpful. God bless you.
