How God created the world

How God created the world

According to the book of Genesis 1:1–31, God created the world in six days. Following is the sequence of events culminating in the creation of the world:

The first chapter of the first book of the Bible, called Genesis, gives us a step-by-step account of the events leading to the creation of the world as we know it today.

In the very first verse of Genesis chapter 1, the Bible tells us that ‘God created the heavens and the earth’. However, Genesis 1:2 paints a very grim picture of the created earth. This is because this verse describes the earth as being

According to the author of the book of Genesis, in the very beginning, the earth was completely covered with water. The Bible then informs us that the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

Then something very significant happened, ‘GOD SPOKE!’ And by so doing, He triggered the creation process.

It was thus through the ‘SPOKEN WORD’ that God created all the seen and unseen things (Colossians 1:15–17).

Let us now look at the process of creation as documented in Genesis, chapter 1.

Day 1: Creation of LIGHT

From Genesis 1:3-5, we see God calling ‘LIGHT’ into existence. This step was essential because, as already mentioned, darkness covered the entire face of the deep (Genesis 1:2).

After creating LIGHT, the Bible says God separated it from darkness. God then named the LIGHT, DAY, and the DARKNESS He called NIGHT. Then the Bible tells us that the evening and the morning came, marking the end of Day 1 of creation (Genesis 1:3-5).

Day 2: Creation of the FIRMAMENT

On the second day, God created a FIRMAMENT in the midst of the waters. The Bible tells us that this firmament ‘divided the waters from the waters’. In other words, some waters gathered above the firmament while the remaining waters gathered below it. God named the firmament Heaven, and then it was evening and morning, which marked the end of Day 2 of creation (Genesis 1:6–8).

Day 3: Creation of the DRY LAND, the GRASS, the HERB, and the FRUIT TREE

On Day 3, the waters under the firmament were gathered together in one place, and the dry land appeared. God called the dry land Earth. The water bodies He called SEAS.

God then commanded the grass, the herb, and the tree to appear on the dry land, and it was so. So it was that the dry land brought forth grass, seed bearing herbs, and fruit bearing trees.

The Bible then declares that when God saw all these, he declared that ‘it was all good.’

Then it was evening and morning, marking the end of Day 3 of creation (Genesis 1:9–10).

Day 4: Creation of the SUN, the MOON, and the STARS

On this Day, God created the sun, the moon, and the stars in the firmament of the heavens. These bodies were created for the following purposes:

Then it was evening and morning, marking the end of Day 4 of creation.

Day 5: Creation of LIVING CREATURES that occupy the waters and the BIRDS

On Day 5, God created the living creatures found in the waters. He also created the birds of the air. The Bible says that all these creatures were created according to their kind.

After creating these creatures, God blessed them by saying, ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth’ (Genesis 1:20-23).

Then, the evening and morning came, marking the end of Day 5 of creation.

Day 6 – Creation of LIVING CREATURES that occupy the DRY LAND

On this day, God created all the living creatures found on the dry land, including cattle, creeping things, and the beasts of the earth.

In Genesis 2:19, we are told how exactly God created the living creatures occupying the earth. This is what it says:

“Out OF THE ground, the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field.”

The Bible says that all these creatures were created according to their kind (Genesis 1:24–25).

Day 6: Creation of MAN

After He was done with creating all the other creatures, God created MAN. The Bible says that God created man in HIS IMAGE, according to HIS LIKENESS. He created them, male and female.

Genesis 2:7 informs us exactly how God formed man. This is what it says:

“And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.”

After creating male and female human beings, God blessed them by saying, ‘Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth’ (Genesis 1:26-28).

Then God gave as food to man every herb that yielded seed and every tree that yielded seed-bearing fruit (Genesis 1:30).

In addition, God gave every green herb as food to the beasts of the earth and the birds of the air (Genesis 1:30).

Then the evening and morning came, marking the end of day 6 of creation.

Day 7 – God RESTS from ALL His work

The Bible tells us that after completing the creation process, God rested on the seventh day. He thus blessed this day and sanctified it (Genesis 2:1–3).

Conclusion

This article discussed how God created the world, as recorded by Moses in Genesis chapters one and two. We cannot tell the exact meaning of the term ‘day’ as used in the creation story, that is, 24 hours or otherwise. Only God knows how long that ‘DAY’ was. I leave you with a favorite text on creation penned by the Apostle Paul as recorded in Colossians 1:15–17. This is what it says while referring to Jesus Christ

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones, dominions, principalities, or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.”
