What does the Bible say about talking too much? 8 things to keep in mind

The following are eight things the Bible says about talking too much:

  • Talking too much may result in sin (Proverbs 10:19).
  • Talking too much may ruin your life (Proverbs 13:3).
  • Talking too much may get your soul into trouble (Proverbs 21:23).
  • You are considered wise and perceptive when you talk less (Proverbs 17:27–28).
  • When we talk less, we manifest the righteousness of God (James 1:19).
  • Talking too much may lead to broken promises (Ecclesiastes 5:2–3).
  • People heed those who talk less than those who talk much (Ecclesiastes 9:17).
  • Talking too much may cause us to be swallowed by the words we speak (Ecclesiastes 10:12–14).

Let us now expound on the above-mentioned points.

1. Talking too much may result in sin.

This is according to Proverbs 10:19. It says

“In the multitude of words, sin is not lacking, but he who restrains his lips is wise.”

This verse means that we should avoid talking too much because when we do so, we normally end up ‘spicing’ the story we are telling to make it more juicy and sweet to the ears of our listeners.

2. Talking too much may ruin your life.

This is according to Proverbs 13:3, which says:

“He who guards his mouth preserves his life, but he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction.”

This scripture teaches that at times, it is better to remain silent and end up with an acquittal rather than argue your case and end up being convicted because of silly mistakes.

That means sometimes our best defense is silence!

3. You are considered wise and perceptive when you talk less.

This is according to Proverbs 17:27–28. It says:

“He who has knowledge spares his words, and a man of understanding is of a calm spirit. Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; when he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive.”

This scripture teaches that when you are slow to speak in response to threatening situations, people will consider you wise and perceptive.

4. Talking too much may get your soul into trouble.

This is recorded in Proverbs 21:23 as follows:

“Whoever guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from trouble.”

When we guard our mouths by only talking when it is necessary, we keep our souls out of trouble.

5. When we talk less, we manifest the righteousness of God.

This is according to James 1:19. It says:

“So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.”

Given our relationship with Christ, people expect our conversation to be Godly at all times. However, when we speak rashly, we may end up uttering words that do not represent the righteousness of God.

This may make people question your faith because they believe that a Christian should never utter certain words.

6. Talking too much may lead to broken pledges.

This is according to the preacher in the book of Ecclesiastes 5:2–3. It says:

“Do not be rash with your mouth, and do not let your heart utter anything hastily before God.” “For God is in heaven and you on earth; for a dream comes through much activity, and a fool’s voice is known by his many words.”

In most cases, when we talk too much, we end up making promises that later become difficult to keep. One of the major weaknesses of men is overrating themselves, especially when in the company of fellow men. In the heat of the moment, someone may make a pledge but have no idea how to fulfill it. This is where the problem creeps in, especially if the pledge is made to God.

When you make a pledge to God and fail to pay it, God calls you a fool. Not only that, He may go ahead and destroy the work of your hands altogether (Ecclesiastes 5:4–7).

It is because of this that the preacher in Ecclesiastes 5:2–3 advises us to be rational when we appear before God. That means, before making any commitment, we should always have a plan on how to fulfill whatever we are pledging to do. Otherwise, he advises us to shut up, listen to the word, and then go home.

As the saying goes, “don’t make promises you can’t keep!”

7. People listen to those who talk less than those who talk much.

This is according to Ecclesiastes 9:17. The scripture says:

“Words of the wise, spoken quietly, should be heard rather than the shout of a ruler of fools.”

This scripture teaches that when we engage our brains before speaking, what comes out of our mouths will be sound wisdom appropriate for implementation.

8. Talking too much may cause us to be swallowed by the words we speak.

This is according to Ecclesiastes 10:12–14. The scripture says:

“The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious, but the lips of a fool shall swallow him up; the words of his mouth begin with foolishness, and the end of his talk is raving madness. A fool also multiplies his words. No man knows what is to come; who can tell him what will be after him?”

According to this scripture, when we speak rashly, we mostly end up misrepresenting facts and, in the process, injuring somebody’s character. That means, when the truth finally comes out and we are found to have spoken out of ignorance, we shall be forced to take back the words we uttered.

The end result is that no one may be willing to trust us anymore, leading to strained relationships.
