Steps to being born again

Steps to being born again

If you desire to be born again, follow these steps:

  1. Confess that you are a sinner in need of salvation.
  2. Acknowledge that Christ Jesus is the Messiah, the only begotten Son of God,
  3. Believe in your heart that God sent Jesus into the world to die for your sins.
  4. Believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus died and rose from the dead.
  5. Get baptized in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
  6. Receive baptism by the Holy Spirit.

Let us now consider the scriptural evidence for the aforementioned steps.

Confessing that you are a sinner in need of salvation

In Romans 3:23, the Bible says:

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

This verse means that all human beings born on earth have sinned against God and have lived way below the standards of God.

How so? You may ask. The answer to this question is found in the book of Genesis, which gives an account of the fall of man. After creating Adam, God placed him in the Garden of Eden and instructed him to eat fruit from all the trees present in the garden, with the exception of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. This is what it says in Genesis 2:16

“And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, ‘of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.’”

However, man disobeyed God and ate the forbidden fruit. As a result, sin entered the world, as recorded in Romans 5:12–19, which says

“Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned.” and

“For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.”

In Romans 7:24, the Bible teaches that we are sinners and in desperate need of salvation.

“O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?”

Moreover, 1 John 1:8 tells us that if we claim to have no sin, we are fooling only ourselves.

“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”

This means that we are all sinners.

Acknowledging that Jesus is the Christ, the only begotten Son of God

The Bible tells us that Jesus Christ was born of the Virgin Mary, who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit. We read this in Matthew 1:18–21.

“Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: after His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with a child of the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph, her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.’”

This birth had been prophesied by prophet Isaiah in Isaiah 7:14

“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.”

Another scripture that points to Jesus as the only begotten Son of God is John 3:16, which says

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

These scriptures are enough evidence for you to acknowledge that indeed Christ Jesus is the Son of God.

Believe in your heart that God sent Jesus to the world to die for your sins,

You must believe that Jesus Christ was sent by His Father to the earth to die for your sins. We have several scriptures that point to this fact.

In Romans 5:8, we read:

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

In John 1:29, we read:

“The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, ‘Behold! The Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!’”

In 1 Peter 2:24, we read:

“Who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.”

Believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus died and rose from the dead

Jesus said, Whoever desires to be born again must believe with his heart and confess with His mouth that He is the Christ. He must also acknowledge that after dying, Jesus rose up again and is now seated at the right hand of God in Heaven. We have the following scriptures to back up this point:

Romans 10:9–10, that says

“That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

1 Peter 1:21, that says

“Who through Him believes in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.”

In Acts 2:22–24, Peter testifies concerning the risen Christ as follows:

“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know—him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death; whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it.”

Get baptized in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit

During the great commission, Jesus instructed His disciples to baptize with water, everyone who would believe the message of salvation. We read this in Matthew 28:18–20 as follows:

“And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ Amen.”

So, as a born-again Christian, you will be required to undergo water baptism in line with Jesus’ command.

This command is also mentioned in John 3:5 during the conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus, as follows:

“Jesus answered, ‘most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.’”

Baptism involves immersion in water, which symbolizes a new birth.

We see the apostles baptizing believers in several scriptures, including the following:

Acts 8:12

“But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized.”

Acts 8:36-38

“Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?’

Then Philip said, ‘if you believe with all your heart, you may.’

And he answered and said, ‘I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him.’”

Receive baptism by the Holy Spirit.

As a believer, you need to be baptized by the Holy Spirit, just like believers in the early church. Is there any Biblical evidence for this requirement? Yes, there is. Consequently, in this section, we look at several scriptures that tell us how this baptism happened in the early church.

In Acts 8:14–17, the Bible says

“Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. For as yet, He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.”

In Acts 19:1-6, we read the following:

“And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples, he said to them, ‘Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?’

So they said to him, ‘we have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.’

And he said to them, ‘into what then were you baptized?’

So they said, ‘into John’s baptism.’

Then Paul said, ‘John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.’

When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.’”

Jesus Himself taught us that one has to receive water baptism and baptism by the Holy Spirit in order to enter the kingdom of God. He said this during His conversation with Nicodemus in John 3:5. The scripture says:

“Jesus answered, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.’”

Conclusion

In this article, we have discussed steps one can follow in order to get born again. They included the following:

  1. Confessing that you are a sinner in need of salvation,
  2. Acknowledging that Christ Jesus is the Messiah, the only begotten Son of God,
  3. Believing in your heart that God sent Jesus into the world to die for your sins,
  4. Believing in your heart and confessing with your mouth that Jesus died and rose from the dead,
  5. Getting baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
  6. Receiving baptism by the Holy Spirit.

Once born again, join a local church that teaches the Bible as it is. In addition, commit some quality time to Bible study on a daily basis. Always pray for understanding and revelation as you continue reading the Bible. I leave you with this scripture found in John 1:12–13 that says:

“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”
