Yes, it is a sin to consult a witch because it may lead to your death, as was the case with King Saul of Israel according to 1 Chronicles 10:13. This scripture says:
“So Saul died for his unfaithfulness, which he had committed against the LORD, because he did not keep the word of the LORD, and also because he consulted a medium for guidance.”
In Exodus 22:18, God expressly warned the children of Israel against allowing a witch to live in their midst. Any witch that was to be found among them was to be put to death by stoning to keep evil out of the land.
Witchcraft was one of the practices undertaken by the inhabitants of Canaan, and it was for this reason that the land got defiled. As a result, the Bible records that the land was vomiting out its inhabitants (Leviticus 18:25).
God hates those who seek counsel from people with familiar spirits, such as witches, mediums, astrologers, palm readers, and the like. This is because, by so doing, they are substituting God for the demonic powers that these individuals represent. By putting demonic forces first in their lives instead of God, they essentially break the commandment that says, “You shall have no other gods before me.” God’s name is Jealous, and He does not hesitate to punish those who hate and despise Him by serving other gods (Exodus 34:14).
Let us now consider more scriptures that indicate that it is a sin to consult a witch.
In Deuteronomy 18:10–12, the Bible records the following words:
“There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch. Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD, and because of these abominations, the LORD, thy God, doth drive them out from before thee. Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD, thy God. For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners; but as for thee, the LORD thy God hath not suffered thee so to do.”
God made it clear to the children of Israel that the land was defiled by these abominable practices. This means that if the children of Israel were to embrace these practices, the land would again get defiled and vomit them out, as recorded in Leviticus 18:24–26, which says:
“Do not defile yourselves with any of these things; for by all these the nations are defiled, which I am casting out before you. For the land is defiled; therefore, I visit the punishment of its iniquity upon it, and the land vomits out its inhabitants. You shall therefore keep My statutes and My judgments and shall not commit any of these abominations, either against your own nation or against any stranger who dwells among you. For whoever commits any of these abominations, the persons who commit them shall be cut off from among their people.”
That means if the children of Israel were to adopt the abominable practices of the Canaanites, God would cast them out of the land just as he did the Canaanites.
In Leviticus 19:31, we see God commanding the children of Israel never to seek the counsel of people with familiar spirits and mediums. This is what the Scripture records:
“Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them to be defiled by them; I am the LORD your God.”
Most people seek out witches, mediums, or people with familiar spirits so that they can be told what the future holds for them. As recorded in the scripture, witches, mediums, and the like only cause defilement and not any good.
In Leviticus 20:6, God warns the children of Israel against defiling themselves by seeking after mediums and familiar spirits, the punishment of which is death. This is what the scripture says:
“And the person who turns to mediums and familiar spirits to prostitute himself with them, I will set My face against that person and cut him off from his people.”
According to Leviticus 20:26–27, wizards, witches, those with familiar spirits, and the like were to be put to death by stoning in order to keep the land undefiled. This is what the scripture says:
“And ye shall be holy unto Me; for I the LORD am holy, and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be Mine. A man or a woman who is a medium, or who has familiar spirits shall surely be put to death; they shall stone them with stones. Their blood shall be upon them.”
The scriptures tell us that during the reign of King Saul of Israel, he drove out of the land of Israel all wizards as well as those with familiar spirits. This is in accordance with the commandment of God, which required all witches to be put to death whenever found. We read this in 1 Samuel 28:3, and it says:
“Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had lamented him, and they buried him in Ramah, even in his own city. And Saul had put away those that had familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land.”
In the book of 1 Chronicles 10:13, we learn that one of the things that contributed to the death of King Saul was consulting someone who had a familiar spirit. The scripture says:
“So Saul died for his unfaithfulness, which he had committed against the LORD, because he did not keep the word of the LORD, and also because he consulted a medium for guidance.”
The Bible gives an account of one of the greatest leaders of Israel, called King Josiah. This king got rid of all who sought after mediums and those with familiar spirits. He also put away household gods and idols and all the abominations in the land that people were worshipping. All this was in an effort to cleanse the land and turn the people back to their God. All these are recorded in 2 Kings 23:24–25, which says:
“Moreover, Josiah put away those who consulted mediums and spiritists, the household gods and idols, and all the abominations that were seen in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, that he might perform the words of the law that were written in the book that Hilkiah the priest found in the house of the LORD. Now before him there was no king like him, who turned to the LORD with all his heart, with all his soul, and with all his might, according to the Law of Moses; nor after him did any arise like him.”
In Isaiah 8:19–20, the prophet reprimands his brethren for seeking after mediums and wizards instead of seeking after their God. This is what the scripture says:
“And when they say to you, “Seek those who are mediums and wizards, who whisper and mutter,” should not a people seek their God? Should they seek out the dead on behalf of the living? To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.”
Conclusion
In this article, we have established that it is a sin to consult a witch. Humans are supposed to seek counsel ONLY from their maker, and that is God. Therefore, by seeking the counsel of people with familiar spirits, such as mediums, palm readers, soothsayers, witches, and the like, you are delegating God to second place, after demons. Demons and familiar spirits are creations of God. Therefore, they can in no way be more knowledgeable or superior to their creator. The Bible says, “For you shall worship no other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.” That is to say, if you are among those who go seeking after the counsel of demons, you are exposing yourself to the wrath of God, and you should therefore, stop before it is too late, repent, and turn your life over to Christ Jesus for salvation.
