Is it a sin to believe in Zodiac signs?

It is a sin to believe in zodiac signs because they attempt to foretell an individual’s personality and life happenings based on their date of birth, while the Bible clearly tells us that it is God who determines what becomes of us according to Jeremiah 1:4-5, which says:

“Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying: “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you; before you were born, I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.””

A similar message is echoed in Isaiah 49:5, which says:

“And now the LORD says, Who formed Me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to Him, so that Israel is gathered to Him (For I shall be glorious in the eyes of the LORD, and my God shall be My strength)”.

The psalmist drives this point home with the following words:

“Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them.” (Psalm 139:16).

From these scriptures, we learn that the date of birth does not feature anywhere in determining what you become in life—your character, your behavior, and all that. Instead, only God holds your future in His hands.

Believing in zodiac signs is also a sin because it involves divination, which God condemns in the Bible. For instance, Deuteronomy 18:10–12 says:

“There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead.”

What are zodiac signs?

There are 12 zodiac signs, as shown below:

  • Aries (March 21 – April 19)
  • Taurus (April 20 – May 20)
  • Gemini (May 21 – June 20)
  • Cancer (June 21 – July 22)
  • Leo (July 23 – August 22)
  • Virgo (August 23 – September 22)
  • Libra (September 23 – October 22)
  • Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)
  • Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)
  • Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)
  • Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)
  • Pisces (February 19 – March 20)

According to this belief system, individuals in each of the identified zodiac signs depict different traits, both positive and negative, strengths and weaknesses, attitudes, and behaviors.

All these Zodiac signs are in turn associated with four main elements: air, water, fire, and earth. The categorization is as shown below:

  • The element of water is associated with Scorpio, Pisces, and Cancer. Individuals in this category are believed to be emotional, mysterious, and sensitive.
  • The element of air is associated with Aquarius, Gemini, and Libra. Individuals in this category are supposedly intellectual, social, and good at advising others.
  • The element of fire is associated with Aries, Sagittarius, and Leo. People in this category are said to be brave, strong, and temperamental.
  • The element of earth is associated with Capricorn, Taurus, and Virgo. Persons in this category are believed to be grounded, practical, and realistic.

It is said that people whose zodiac signs are in the same element are highly likely to be compatible, while those whose signs fall in different elements are incompatible.

Scriptures against believing in zodiac signs

Zodiac signs make use of divination, which is detestable to God. The Bible says we should seek the counsel of God alone about our lives and no other, for only the counsel of God can stand the test of time. We read this in Psalm 33:10–11:

“The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; He makes the plans of the peoples of no effect. The counsel of the LORD stands forever, the plans of His heart are for all generations.”

According to the Bible, God desires that we only seek His wisdom. He warned the children of Israel against engaging in the practices of the Canaanites, including witchcraft, soothsaying, seeking mediums, seeking spiritists, and calling up the dead, among other abominable practices. We find this warning in Deuteronomy 18:9–14 that says:

“When you come into the land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominations of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. All who do these things are an abomination to the LORD, and because of these abominations, the LORD, your God, drives them out from before you. You shall be blameless before the LORD, your God. For these nations, which you will dispose of, listened soothsayers and diviners; but as for you, the LORD your God has not appointed such for you.”

We learn from this passage that the inhabitants of Canaan had soothsayers and diviners whom they used to consult for counsel. For this reason, God drove the Canaanites out of the land and gave it to the children of Israel.

The children of Israel were also warned against being captivated by heavenly bodies to the extent of worshipping them. We find this in Deuteronomy 4:19, which says:

“And take heed, lest you lift your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun, the moon, and the stars, all the host of heaven, you feel driven to worship them and serve them, which the LORD your God has given to all the people under the whole heaven as a heritage.”

In Leviticus 19:31, God warns the children of Israel against seeking counsel from mediums and people with familiar spirits. This is what the scripture says:

“Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them to be defiled by them; I am the LORD your God.”

Another scripture that shows God is against astrologers, soothsayers, magicians, and the like is Daniel 2:27–28. This is because they could not tell King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon his dream or its interpretation. We see that only Daniel was able to do so after praying to God, who revealed to him the dream and its interpretation. This is what the scripture says:

“Daniel answered in the presence of the king and said, “The secret which the king has demanded, the wise men, the astrologers, the magicians, and the soothsayers cannot declare to the king. But there is a God in heaven who reveals secrets, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will be in the latter days”.

The prophet Isaiah mocks the children of Israel by asking them to call out for help from astrologers, stargazers, and prognosticators, whose counsel they have pursued instead of seeking God. This account is recorded in Isaiah 47:13–14, which reads as follows:

“You are wearied in the multitude of your counsels; Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, and the monthly prognosticators stand up and save you from what shall come upon you. Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame; it shall not be a coal to be warmed by, nor a fire to sit before!”

Basically, this passage is talking about judgment. It is instructive to note that the fate of the astrologers, stargazers, and monthly prognosticators is similar to that of those who seek their services.

In Leviticus 19:26, God warns the children of Israel against seeking after mediums and familiar spirits as follows:

“Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them, to be defiled by them; I am the LORD your God.”

We learn that mediums and those with familiar spirits bring defilement to those who seek their services.

Another warning from God to those who seek counsel from mediums and spiritists is to be found in Leviticus 20:6, which says:

“And the person who turns to mediums and familiar spirits to prostitute himself with them, I will set My face against that person and cut him off from his people.”

This passage shows us that the person who seeks counsel from elsewhere instead of God will be opposed by God in whatever he does. In addition, such a person risks being alienated from the people of God, that is, the children of Israel as of then or the body of Christ in the present dispensation.

In Micah 5:12, we find these words:

“I will cut off sorceries from your hand, and you shall have no soothsayers.”

In this passage, God tells the children of Israel that He will remove from their midst anyone who practices sorcery and soothsaying. This is to prevent these people from misleading the children of Israel.

Prophet Isaiah challenges the children of Israel to seek after the counsel of God instead of mediums and wizards, as we read in Isaiah 8:19:

“And when they say to you, “Seek those who are mediums and wizards, who whisper and mutter,” should not a people seek their God? Should they seek the dead on behalf of the living?”

King Saul of Israel lost his life because he sought guidance from a medium instead of seeking counsel from God. We read this in 1 Chronicles 10:13–14. The Bible says:

“So Saul died for his unfaithfulness, which he had committed against the LORD, because he did not keep the word of the LORD, and also because he consulted a medium for guidance. But he did not inquire of the LORD; therefore He killed him, and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.”

This passage tells you two things that resulted from Saul’s disobedience and unfaithfulness to God. God killed him, and then he lost the kingdom to the house of David.

Now, if God did not spare King Saul, His anointed, what about you if you go after the counsel of the zodiac signs instead of seeking your maker?

There are many other scriptures I may have missed that show believing in zodiac signs is a sin. Be a good Bible student and search the scriptures, for therein lies the wisdom of God, not in zodiac signs.

Conclusion

Using scripture, we have established that it is a sin to believe in zodiac signs. When you consult your zodiac sign in order to ‘know’ what tomorrow brings, what you are telling God is that you trust the horoscopes more than you trust Him. This means that God comes second to the zodiac signs in your life. This is what the Bible calls idolatry. And what is the penalty for idolatry? We find the answer to this question in Exodus 20:4-6, which says:

“You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.”

So there you have it: your actions today can earn you and your generations to come God’s wrath or God’s mercy; choose wisely.
