Astrology is a sin because it is a form of divination that the Bible has prohibited by stating that “There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. All who do these are an abomination to the LORD, and because of these abominations, the LORD, your God, drives them out before you. You shall be blameless before the LORD, your God. For these nations which you will dispossess listened to soothsayers and diviners; but as for you, the LORD your God has not appointed such for you.” (Deuteronomy (18:10-14).

According to this passage, God considers the following practices abominations:

  • Calling up the dead
  • Conjuring spells
  • Fortune-telling
  • Interpreting omens
  • Sorcery
  • Spiritism
  • Witchcraft

Therefore, engaging in these practices defiles the land, causing it to vomit the inhabitants therein. This is recorded in Leviticus 18:27–28 as follows:

“For all these abominations the men of the land have done, who were before you, and thus the land is defiled, lest the land vomit you out also when you defile it, as it vomited out the nations that were before you.”

God tells the children of Israel that these nations listened to the counsel of their soothsayers and diviners, thus causing their downfall.

What is astrology?

Astrology is a practice involving foretelling future events using the relative positions in the sky of heavenly bodies such as the sun, the moon, the stars, and the planets. It also involves revealing hidden phenomena or secrets by using signs and other supernatural powers.

The term astrology in Hebrew means divining the heavens.

So, what an astrologer does is study the relative positioning of heavenly bodies and use that knowledge to foretell your future.

As a result, the astrologer is elevated to the position of God, and people go to seek his counsel instead of seeking God. This goes against the commandment of God that says, “You shall have no other gods before Me,” as recorded in Exodus 20:3.

Origin of Astrology

In the olden days, most pagan people found in the Bible seemed to practice astrology as a form of divination. The inhabitants of Canaan are quoted in the Bible as being among those who practiced divination. Archeological evidence indicates that most cultures that existed in the East used to practice divination in the form of astrology, fortune-telling, and the like.

The Bible records that at one time, King Nebuchadnezer, ruler of Babylon, had a disturbing dream for which he wanted an interpretation. The Scriptures say that none of his astrologers, Chaldeans, magicians, soothsayers, or wise men could help him. These events are recorded in Daniel 2:2, which says:

“Then the king gave the command to call the magicians, the astrologers, the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans to tell the king his dreams. So they came and stood before the king.”

From this verse, we learn that the people of Babylon used to practice magic, astrology, and sorcery in those days.

Why do people consult astrologers?

The answer to this question is curiosity. People all over the world are always curious to “know” what the future holds for them and, if or where possible, manipulate events so that things turn out well for them.

Everyone wants a favorable outcome for all that they do. The only problem is that they don’t have knowledge about their future. It is this appetite and hunger for knowledge about the future that feed the many dens of astrologers.

In the dispensation we are living in, many people from all walks of life have sought the services of astrologers to see if they can acquire this information.

Let no one lie to you; this practice is deeply enshrined in all spheres of our lives, including the social, political, and economic arenas. It can be found in politics, sports, marriage, career progression, and business dealings, among others.

People who seek the counsel of astrologers erroneously believe that they will have an advantage of some sort when armed with information about their future. This is wrong because in Matthew 6:34, Jesus exhorts us to live a day at a time in order to keep worry and anxiety at bay. This scripture says:

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficiency for the day is its own trouble.”

Does astrology work?

According to the Bible, ASTROLOGY DOES NOT WORK and is only an exercise in futility. We consider several examples from the scriptures to show that not only is astrology a sin, but it also doesn’t work well.

In the book of Daniel 2, all the astrologers, magicians, Chaldeans, soothsayers, and wise men called by the king were unable to tell his dream and the interpretation thereof. Only Daniel, in whom the spirit of God was, could tell of the king’s dream and its interpretation. We get this account in Daniel 2:27–30, which says:

“Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said, “The secret which the king has demanded, the wise men, the astrologers, the magicians, and the soothsayers cannot declare to the king. But there is a God in heaven who reveals secrets, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezer what will be in the latter days.””

From this passage, you can see that only God can foretell the future and reveal secrets.

Isaiah 8:19 shows God’s displeasure with those who seek counsel from fortune tellers, mediums, and wizards. This is what we read in Isaiah 8:19:

“And when they say to you, “Seek those who are mediums and wizards, who whisper and mutter,” should not a people seek their God? Should they seek the dead on behalf of the living?”

In Isaiah 47:13–14, we discover that astrologers cannot be of any help to us, and their end together with those who seek their counsel is death and destruction. We thus read:

“You are wearied in the multitude of your counsels; Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, and the monthly prognosticators stand up and save you from what shall come upon you. Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame; it shall not be a coal to be warmed by nor a fire to sit before!”

Consequences of engaging in astrology

By seeking the counsel of astrologers, you expose yourself to the wrath of God, as outlined in Leviticus 20:6, which says:

“And the person who turns to mediums and familiar spirits to prostitute himself with, I will set My face against that person and cut him off from his people.”

When you seek the counsel of astrologers, God says that He will set His face against you and cut you off from your people. This literally spells doom for your life, whichever direction you turn.

Being cut off from your people means that God stops looking at you as a believer. It means God abandoning you, leaving you without protection “against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places (Ephesians 6:12). That is not an admirable place to be, trust me.

King Saul died because he sought guidance from a medium. This account is recorded in the book of 1 Chronicles 10:13–14, which says:

“So Saul died for his unfaithfulness, which he had committed against the LORD, because he did not keep the word of the LORD, and also because he consulted a medium for guidance. But he did not inquire of the LORD; therefore, He killed him and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.”

Because of King Saul’s disobedience, he was punished by God. Notice that the punishment was twofold: number one, his death, and number two, the transfer of the kingdom to the house of David.

So as you can see, when you seek counsel from an astrologer, you are not only courting death but also, loss of status that may extend to your descendants.

In Leviticus 19:26, the children of Israel are warned against the practice of divination and sorcery. This is what we read:

“You shall not eat anything with the blood, nor shall you practice divination and soothsaying.” In Micah 5:12, God shows His distaste for astrology by stating that “I will cut off sorceries from your hand, And you shall have no soothsayers.” This tells us that if sorcery and soothsaying were not harmful, God would not talk of removing them from the land.”

Conclusion

This article examined whether it is sinful to seek counsel from astrology. We have established that it is indeed a sin to go searching for the counsel of astrologers. We looked at scriptural evidence that proves astrology doesn’t work. The Bible exhorts you to only seek after God’s counsel, for therein lies your salvation. I leave you with two scriptures: James 1:5 and Psalm 32:8. The Bible says:

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to ALL liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him” (James 1:5).

“I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.” (Psalm 32:8).
