How does the Bible describe Jesus Christ

The Bible describes Jesus as follows:

  • A tender plant (Isaiah 53:2)
  • A root out of dry ground (Isaiah 53:2)
  • A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief (Isaiah 53:3)
  • The Righteous Servant (Isaiah 53:12)
  • Wonderful (Isaiah 9:6)
  • Counselor (Isaiah 9:6)
  • The Mighty God (Isaiah 9:6)
  • The Everlasting Father (Isaiah 9:6)
  • The Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6)
  • The Lamb of God (John 1:29)
  • The Word of God (John 1:1–3)
  • The Messiah (John 4:25–26)
  • The Son of David (Matthew 1:1)
  • The Son of Abraham (Matthew 1:1)
  • The Lion of Judah (Revelation 5:5)
  • The Faithful Witness (Revelation 1:4-5; Revelation 3:14)
  • The Firstborn from the Dead (Revelation 1:18)
  • Ruler over the kings of the earth (Revelation 1:5)
  • The Root of David (Isaiah 11:1-2; Revelation 22:16)
  • The First and the Last (Revelation 1:17)
  • The Alpha and Omega (Revelation 1:8)
  • The Beginning and the End (Revelation 1:8)
  • The Almighty (Revelation 1:8)

In this section, we highlight scriptures in the Bible that describe Jesus Christ in the ways identified above.

1. Bible verse that describes Jesus Christ as a tender plant

Isaiah 53:2

“For He shall grow up before Him as a TENDER PLANT, And as a root out of dry ground, He has no form or comeliness; and when we see Him, there is no beauty that we should desire in Him.”

Tenderness is representative of gentleness and kindness. Therefore, Isaiah 53:2 means that Jesus will grow before God the Father as a kind and gentle person. In fact, Jesus asks His disciples to emulate this character in Matthew 11:29 by saying,

“Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am GENTLE and LOWLY IN HEART, and you will find rest for your souls.”

This implies that when you walk in gentleness and humility, your soul will find rest.

2. Bible verse that describes Jesus Christ as a root out of dry ground

Isaiah 53:2

“For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, And as A ROOT OUT OF DRY GROUND, He has no form or comeliness, and when we see Him, there is no beauty that we should desire Him.”

Under normal circumstances, a root always grows out of well-watered ground. But in the case of Jesus, Prophet Isaiah tells us that He would grow out of dry ground. The term ‘ground’ represents the ‘heart of men, as recorded in Hosea 10:12, which says

“Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap in mercy; BREAK UP YOUR FALLOW GROUND, for it is time to seek the LORD, till He comes and rains righteousness on you.”

Therefore, ‘dry ground’ represents a heart with ‘inadequate deposits of the word of God’.

So the root of Christ would germinate at a time when the hearts of men were ‘dry’ and thirsty, yearning for the TRUE word of God.

3. Bible verse that describes Jesus Christ as a Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief

Isaiah 53:3

“He is despised and rejected by men, A MAN OF SORROWS AND ACQUAINTED WITH GRIEF. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.”

This passage talks of the sorrows experienced by Jesus as a result of being rejected by His own people and the rest of mankind whom He came to save.

We see this happening when the Jews opt for the release of a criminal called Barabbas while calling for the execution of Jesus the Christ.

This rejection continued even after the resurrection of Jesus and His ascension to heaven.

4. Bible verse that describes Jesus Christ as The Righteous Servant

Isaiah 53:11

“He shall see the labor of His soul and be satisfied. By His knowledge, My RIGHTEOUS SERVANT shall justify many, for He shall bear their iniquities.”

In this verse, God the Father refers to Jesus as His Righteous Servant, who left His glory and came to die for the sins of men. By His death, many were made the righteousness of God (Romans 5:18–21).

Similar sentiments are echoed in 2 Corinthians 5:21, which says,

“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

He is called righteous because He was born without sin (Luke 1:26-38) and never sinned throughout the time He was here on earth.

5. Bible verse that describes Jesus Christ as Wonderful

Isaiah 9:6

“For unto us a Child is born; unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

In reference to the Oxford English Dictionary, being ‘wonderful’ is synonymous with being ‘marvelous, magnificent, superb, glorious, lovely, and delightful.’

All these attributes are thus assigned to Jesus every time we call Him wonderful.

6. Bible verse that describes Jesus Christ as Counselor

Isaiah 9:6

“For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

Jesus is called Counselor because all the seven Spirits of God rest upon Him, including ‘The Spirit of the LORD, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge, and the Spirit of the fear of the LORD’ (Isaiah 11:2).

7. Bible verse that describes Jesus Christ as the Mighty God

Isaiah 9:6

“For unto us a Child is born; unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

In this verse, Jesus is described as a Mighty God. This means a powerful God. This scripture is in line with what John writes in John 1:1, which says:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word WAS God. He was in the beginning with God.”

In this verse, the WORD refers to Jesus.

After resurrecting, Jesus told His disciples that ALL AUTHORITY had been delivered to Him. We read this in Matthew 28:18

“And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, ‘ALL AUTHORITY HAS BEEN GIVEN TO ME IN HEAVEN AND ON EARTH.’”

This authority means power or might. This makes Jesus mighty or powerful.

8. Bible verse that describes Jesus Christ as Everlasting Father

Isaiah 9:6

“For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

9. Bible verse that describes Jesus Christ as the Prince of Peace

Isaiah 9:6

“For unto us a Child is born; unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

The world today is faced with many challenges, one of which is a constant war pitting tribe against tribe, race against race, and nation against nation. Efforts to reconcile the warring parties and establish long-term peace have, in most cases, been unsuccessful.

This is because we live in a sinful world where man’s rebellion is the order of the day.

The Bible teaches that only Jesus will restore peace in our chaotic world at His second coming (Revelation 20:4-6).

In John 14:27, Jesus bestowed upon His disciples the peace of God that surpasses all understanding, in the midst of a troubled world.

Thus, when you have the peace of God (Philippians 4:6) and are at peace with God (Romans 5:1), you will persevere and overcome all trials that come your way.

10. Bible verse that describes Jesus Christ as Lamb of God

John 1:29

“The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, ‘Behold! THE LAMB OF GOD who takes away the sin of the world!’”

These words were spoken by John the Baptist at River Jordan when Jesus came to him to be baptized. In this passage, John informs the listeners that Jesus is the promised Messiah.

This is the Lamb that John saw in Revelation 5:6 and Revelation 5:12, which say

“And I looked, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood a LAMB AS THOUGH IT HAD BEEN SLAIN, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth.”

“Saying with a loud voice: ‘Worthy is THE LAMB WHO WAS SLAIN to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing!’”

11. Bible verse that describes Jesus Christ as the Word of God

John 1:1-3

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was at the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.”

The book of Genesis teaches that God SPOKE everything seen and unseen into existence. This means that God created the universe and all that exists in it by the WORD. This WORD is Jesus Christ.

This is the same thing that the Apostle Paul teaches us in Colossians 1:15–16, which says

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For BY HIM ALL THINGS WERE CREATED THAT ARE IN HEAVEN AND THAT ARE ON EARTH, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.”

12. Bible verse that describes Jesus Christ as Messiah

John 4:25:26

“The woman said to Him, ‘I know that the Messiah is coming (who is called the Christ). When He comes, He will tell us all things.’ Jesus said to her, ‘I WHO SPEAK TO YOU AM HE.’”

This was a conversation between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well. It is one of the few scriptures in which Jesus Christ directly refers to Himself as the Messiah.

John 1:40–42 also describes Jesus as the Messiah as follows:

“One of the two who heard John speak and followed Him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found His own brother Simon and said to him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ (which is translated, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus.”

Daniel also talks of the death of the Messiah in Daniel 9:26, saying:

“And after the sixty-two weeks, Messiah SHALL BE CUT OFF, but not for Himself; and the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end of it shall be a flood, and till the end of the war, desolations are determined.”

13. Bible verse that describes Jesus Christ as Son of David

Matthew 1:1

“The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the SON OF DAVID, the Son of Abraham”

This is to say that Jesus Christ is a descendant of King David of Israel.

This statement is reinforced by John the Apostle in John 7:42 as follows:

“Has not the Scripture said that Christ comes from the SEED OF David and from the town of Bethlehem, where David was?”

14. Bible verse that describes Jesus Christ as Son of Abraham

Matthew 1:1

“The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son OF Abraham.”

This scripture shows that Christ Jesus is a descendant of Abraham.

This point is emphasized by the Apostle Paul in Galatians 3:16, which says

“Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, ‘And seeds,’ as of many, but as of ONE, ‘And to your Seed, WHO IS CHRIST.’”

15. Bible verse that describes Jesus Christ as Lion of Judah

Revelation 5:5

“But one of the elders said to me, ‘Do not weep. Behold, THE LION OF THE TRIBE OF JUDAH, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals.’”

Jesus is described as the Lion of Judah because, by His death on the cross, ‘He disarmed principalities and powers, and made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it’ (Colossians 2:15).

It was by laying down His life on the cross that Jesus Christ ‘prevailed to open the scroll and loose its seven seals, as recorded in Revelation 5:5.

16. Bible verse that describes Jesus Christ as the Faithful Witness

Revelation 1:4-5

“John, to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, and from Jesus Christ the FAITHFULL WITNESS, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth.”

Christ was the faithful witness because He was obedient up to His death in order to fulfill the commandment of God, which was to die on the cross for the sins of the world. This is recorded in Philippians 2:8 as follows:

“And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even of the cross.”

In Revelation 3:14, the Apostle John again talks about the Faithful Witness by saying, “ And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans, write, ‘These things say the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God.’”

17. Bible verse that describes Jesus Christ as Firstborn from the Dead

Revelation 1:5

“And from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the FIRSTBORN FROM THE DEAD, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood.”

See also Revelation 1:18

“I AM HE WHO LIVES AND WAS DEAD, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death.”

The Bible teaches that all men born on earth will one day die. After death, judgment follows.

Now, Jesus came to die for each and every person on earth. His death and resurrection made Him the first person to be resurrected in righteousness.

Thus, every born-again Christian, when they die, awaits the resurrection of their bodies that will happen in the second coming of Jesus, as recorded in 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17.

18. Bible verse that describes Jesus Christ as Ruler over the kings of the earth

The Bible also describes Jesus Christ as the Ruler over the kings of the earth in Revelation 1:5 as follows:

“And from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the RULER OVER THE KINGS OF THE Earth,”

This will happen during the millennium, which refers to the one thousand years of the reign of Christ here on earth. This is recorded in Revelation 20:4-6.

19. Bible verse that describes Jesus Christ as The Root of David

Isaiah 11:1-2

“There shall come forth a ROD FROM THE STEM OF Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots. The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him; The spirit of wisdom and understanding; The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.“

In this passage, Prophet Isaiah is believed to have been referring to Christ Jesus as the Messiah, who would descend from the lineage of King David.

Revelation 22:16

“I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.”

Again, here we see Jesus referring to Himself as the Root and Offspring of King David.

20. Bible verse that describes Jesus Christ as The First and the Last

Revelation 1:17

“And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, ‘Do not be afraid; I am THE FIRST AND THE LAST.’”

In this passage, the glorified Christ declares that He is the First and the Last, implying that everything begins and ends with Him. This declaration is also recorded in John 1:1–3.

21. Bible verse that describes Jesus Christ as the Alpha and Omega

Revelation 1:8

“I am the ALPHA AND THE OMEGA, the Beginning and the End,’ says the Lord, ‘who is and who was and who is to come, the almighty.’”

The theme of this passage is similar to what we find in Revelation 1:17, which talks of Jesus as being the beginning and the end of everything.

22. Bible verse that describes Jesus Christ as The Beginning and the End

Revelation 1:8

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the BEGINNING AND THE END, says the Lord, ‘who is and who was and who is to come, the almighty.’”

This verse declares Jesus Christ as the origin of all things, as mentioned in John 1:1–3 and Colossians 1:15–17.

22. Bible verse that describes Jesus Christ as The Almighty

Revelation 1:8

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, says the Lord, ‘who is and who was and who is to come, THE ALMIGHTY.’”

This implies that with Jesus, all things are possible.
