What are the roles of a woman in marriage? 5 main duties of a wife according to the Bible

The following are the roles and duties of a woman (wife) in marriage, according to the Bible:

  • A woman or wife plays the role of a helper in marriage (Genesis 2:18).
  • A woman or wife is expected to meet the sexual needs of her husband (1 Corinthians 7:3-5).
  • A woman or wife should submit and respect her husband (5:22–24).
  • A woman, or wife, should be faithful to her husband (Exodus 20:14).
  • A woman or wife should take good care of her husband and household (Proverbs 31:10–31).

Let us examine each one of them one at a time.

1. A woman or wife plays the role of a helper in marriage.

A woman was created to help the man accomplish the tasks that God had assigned to him. This is according to Genesis 2:18 and Genesis 2:21–24.

Here is what Genesis 2:18 (NKJV) says:

“And the LORD God said, ‘it is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.’”

And here is what Genesis 2:21–24 (NKJV) says:

“And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh in its place. Then the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.

And Adam said, ‘This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman, because she was taken out of man.’

Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”

2. A woman or wife is expected to meet the sexual needs of her husband.

Another Biblical duty or role of a woman is to meet the sexual needs of her husband. This is according to 1 Corinthians 7:3-5 (CEB), which says:

“The husband should meet his wife’s sexual needs, and the wife should do the same for her husband. The wife doesn’t have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise, the husband doesn’t have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Don’t refuse to meet each other’s needs unless you both agree for a short period of time to devote yourselves to prayer. Then come back together again so that Satan might not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.”

3. A woman or wife should submit to and respect her husband.

This is according to the following scriptures:

Ephesians 5:22–24 (CEB) says:

“For example, wives should submit to their husbands as if to the Lord. A husband is the head of his wife, just as Christ is the head of the church, that is, the savior of the body. So wives submit to their husbands in everything like the church submits to Christ.”

Ephesians 5:33 (CEB) says:

“In any case, as for you individually, each one of you should love his wife as himself, and wives should respect their husbands.”

Colossians 3:18 (NIV) says:

“Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.”

1 Peter 3:1-6 (NIV) says:

“Wives, likewise, be submissive to your husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives when they observe your chaste conduct accompanied by fear.

Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel—but rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God. For in this manner, in former times, the holy women who trusted in God also adorned themselves, being submissive to their own husbands, as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, whose daughters you are if you do good and are not afraid of any terror.”

4. A woman or wife should be faithful to her husband.

This is according to Exodus 20:14 (NIV), which says:

“You shall not commit adultery.”

5. A woman or wife should take good care of her husband and household.

A woman or wife takes good care of her husband and household. This is according to Proverbs 31:10–27 and Titus 2:4-5.

Proverbs 31:10–27 says:

“A wife of noble character, who can find her?” She is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks anything of value. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.

She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands. She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar. She gets up while it is still night; she provides food for her family and portions for her female servants.

She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings, she plants a vineyard. She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks.

She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night. In her hand, she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers.

She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.

When it snows, she has no fear for her household, for all of them are clothed in scarlet. She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple.

Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.

She makes linen garments and sells them, and she supplies the merchants with sashes. She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.

She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.”

Titus 2:4-5 (NIV) says:

“Then they can urge younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.”

I hope this is helpful. God bless you.
