What is the purpose for marriage, according to the Bible?

According to the Bible, God’s purpose for instituting marriage includes the following:

  • Procreation
  • Companionship
  • Check sexual immorality
  • Rulership

Let us examine the above points in more detail.

1. According to the Bible, procreation is one of God’s purposes for marriage.

In Genesis 1:26-28 (NKJV), we learn that God created mankind and instructed him to populate the earth. This is what the scripture says:

“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, according to likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’

So God created man in His own image; in the image of God, He created him; male and female, He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.’”

In Genesis 6:1, the same instructions are issued to Noah and his sons after the great flood. Here is what the scripture says:

“So God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, ‘be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.’”

God further repeats the instruction in Genesis 9:7, which says:

“And as for you, be fruitful and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth and multiply in it.”

In order to ensure the continuity of the human race, God blesses married couples with children, as shown in the following scriptures:

Psalm 127:3-5

“Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD; the fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth. Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them; they shall not be ashamed, but shall speak with their enemies in the gate.”

2. According to the Bible, companionship is one of God’s purposes for marriage.

After creating Adam and putting him in the Garden of Eden to tend and keep it, the Bible teaches that God saw that he was lonely. As a result, God created Eve to be Adam’s companion. This is recorded in Genesis 2:18 and Genesis 2:21–23.

Genesis 2:18 (NKJV) says:

“And the LORD God said, ‘it is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.’”

Furthermore, Ecclesiastes 4:9–12 (NKJV) emphasizes the importance of companionship in a marriage relationship by stating as follows:

“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, for he has no one to help him up.

Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm, but how can one be warm alone? Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”

3. According to the Bible, the promotion of sexual morality is one of God’s purposes for marriage.

The Apostle Paul teaches that men ought to marry so that they avoid ‘burning with passion’, which may drive them to commit sexual immorality. We read this in 1 Corinthians 7:8, which says:

“But I say to the unmarried and to the widows: it is good for them if they remain even as I am; but if they cannot exercise self-control, let them marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.”

4. According to the Bible, rulership is one of God’s purposes for marriage.

For a person to be given the responsibility of an overseer in the house of God, he must show that he is capable of managing his family well.

We read this in 1 Timothy 3:1–5, which says:

“This is a faithful saying: if a man desires the position of bishop, he desires good work. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; one who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence (for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?)

In fact, man was created to exercise rulership within the marriage framework, as recorded in Genesis 1:27–28, which says:

“So God created man in His own image; in the image of God, He created him; male and female, He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.’”

I hope this is helpful. God bless you.
